Meet the Owner: My Journey into Massage Therapy

Aloha!

Hi, I’m August, a licensed massage therapist and the proud owner of Bluwhale Massage LLC. Since starting my career in 2024, I’ve been fortunate to be part of the wonderful community in Wilmington, NC. My passion for massage therapy has only grown, and I’m excited to share my story with you.

My Story

My interest in massage therapy began at a young age. As a child, I wanted to help my loved ones by offering them massages because I disliked seeing my family and friends in pain. Coming from a family of nurses and military members, chronic pain was common. As I grew older, I developed a deep appreciation for the skill involved in providing an effective massage. After the extended isolation during COVID-19 and observing the impact on my community due to the lack of human contact and self-care, I decided to attend massage school. I can confidently say that enrolling in massage school was the best decision of my life. Before attending, I had never received a massage, and especially after the pandemic, I was definitely touch-starved, which negatively affected my mental health. Transitioning from minimal physical contact for years to receiving up to four hours of massages daily for six months was a positive shock to my system. I became more social, less anxious, and my overall mood improved significantly. This experience reinforced my belief in the transformative power of massage therapy. I strive to incorporate this understanding into my daily practice by providing slow, intentional massages tailored to each client.

Why I Chose Massage Therapy as a Career

The first massage I received was during Massage School, and it was awkward. We were both nervous students trying to learn a new skill, and nothing heightens anxiety more than having a group of people you just met watch as oil is massaged onto your bare back. However, as the weeks went by and we learned new techniques to practice on each other, the massages began to feel more "connected." Receiving daily massages for over six months made me feel connected to my body in ways I hadn't experienced before, especially since COVID-19. I became more aware of the sources of my physical pain, and my anxiety was less burdensome. Realizing how disconnected my body had been for years sparked a strong interest in learning Lomi Lomi Massage. Lomi Lomi is a traditional Hawaiian massage that emphasizes long, full-body strokes, connecting from your foot, through your shoulder, to your hand. It's a beautiful specialty that I have become very passionate about.

Passion for Healing and Holistic Care

Massage plays a crucial role in holistic healthcare. The advantages of receiving regular massages have been documented since ancient times, including reduced soreness and muscle pain, enhanced joint movement and flexibility, improved circulation, and the overall benefits of feeling safe and relaxed. I value a healthy and safe community and want people to move around pain-free, whether that pain is physical or emotional. I have treated individuals who have experienced chronic pain for years and those with disabling conditions that have prevented them from working; I have witnessed how massage has improved my clients' lives. Every time I see a client go from barely being able to walk due to back pain to requesting a relaxation massage because they feel fine, it reminds me why I chose this career in the first place.

My Certifications

I am passionate about learning new things, particularly in the field of massage. Throughout my career, I have obtained certifications in Thai Yoga Massage, Lomi Lomi, Hot Stones, Gliding Cupping, Aromatherapy, Cold Stones & Cryotherapy, Sports Massage, and much more. I have attended classes on trauma-informed care, scar tissue, and various aspects of anatomy and pathology. I am dedicated to learning something new every week, which has greatly enhanced my understanding of the human body and massage therapy. This year, I aim to broaden my expertise in post-surgical massage, as well as pre/post-natal massage.
